WHAT TO START WITH BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

Consultation is necessary

Each procedure is preceded by a consultation; plastic surgery of the abdomen is no exception. You will be taken care of directly by a plastic surgeon at the Aesthevita plastic surgery clinic and he/she will tell you where the incision will be made, how much skin will be removed and what result you can look forward to. You will certainly leave the consultation with a clearer image of what is ahead of you.

Excess skin removal

Thanks to modern plastic surgery, it is possible to solve the problem with the excess skin and fat and stitching the rectus abdominis muscles quickly and smartly. The effect is also appreciable for women with a weak abdominal wall, sagging skin and stretch marks. The abdominoplasty takes care of your skin so it will be tightened on your abdomen again.

Right before the surgery

Before the procedure, you undergo the pre-surgery examination with blood sampling and an ECG. Clients aged over 60 undergo an x-ray of the lungs as well, for smokers the age limit is lowered to 50+.

WHAT IS HAPPENING UNDER THE HANDS OF A SURGEON

What does the surgery consist of

The abdominoplasty is always performed under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision on the basis of several factors which will be assessed during the pre-surgery consultation. He/she will either choose to make a vertical incision, or a combination of vertical and horizontal incisions when changing the position of the navel. When a mini abdominoplasty is sufficient, the position of the navel is not changed and the incision is made at the level of the pelvic bones, just above the pubic hair. The surgeon removes the excess skin and, if necessary, he/she also stitches the abdominal muscles which tighten the abdominal wall. He/she will stitch the wound with absorbable sutures.

What about the scar

If the wound is located at the pelvic bones, it remains hidden by underwear most of the time after the surgery or under a swimsuit in summer. You are the only one to know about it. If the incision is made another way, a thin scar will remain slightly apparent. During your recovery you will be given precise instructions to take care of your wound properly, so it heals well. This takes at least half a year.

Overnight stay at the clinic

After general anaesthesia, a short 2 night stay in hospital is necessary – depending on the assessment of the surgeon. You will receive the best care at the clinic, you will get some rest and the doctor will remove the drains before you leave the clinic.

THE WAYS IN WHICH I CAN SUPPORT RECOVERY

Healing starts with resting

You will start the healing process with a week of resting immediately after the procedure. Resting is very important for the body and especially for the healing wound, do not skip it. You will be able to handle the physical exertion you used to before the surgery after 6 weeks at the earliest.

Wear a compression belt

You have to cope with an elastic compression belt during recovery. It will be tightening the abdominal area for the whole 6 weeks and assisting the successful healing of the scars.

Tip: We recommend you to get a second elastic belt for changing, e.g. for the time the first one is in the washing machine. You can minimize the risk of the infection only with maximum cleanliness. It is essential mainly for the first days after the surgery. Wash the belt as often as you think is appropriate – even daily.

When do the bruises disappear

There is probably no surgery without bruises and swelling. They are the body’s natural reaction and you should take them as such. Small bruises and swelling will disappear within two weeks after the abdominoplasty. They remain hidden under the elastic belt most of the time. Start with pressure massage of the scars two to three weeks after the surgery. The skin will tighten better and become lighter in colour.

HOW IT WILL CHANGE MY LIFE

The abdominoplasty will not help you to lose weight

Plastic surgery of the abdomen is not aimed towards weight reduction. On the contrary, it is a good idea to undergo the surgery when you achieve your ideal weight in order to avoid further stretching and loosening of the skin.

Unfortunately, even plastic surgery cannot stop time. To prolong the effect of abdominoplasty, use quality skin tightening cosmetics. You can slow down the process of sagging which will come naturally in years due to ageing.
